3D Scope II – Multi-Homing
How to Set Up One Device and Its Count Lines in Multiple Locations
1. Overview
What is Multi-Homing?
Multi-Homing allows a single 3D Scope II device to contribute traffic data to multiple logical locations within your account.
This is typically used when:
- Multiple stores share a lobby
- A building contains several sub-tenants
- There are shared entrances
- A store has both internal and external entrances
- You need individual occupancy + total building occupancy
Example Scenario
A building contains:
- Main Lobby
- Store 1
- Store 2
- Entire Premises (total occupancy)
Each area requires its own occupancy tracking, but some entrances are shared.
Multi-Homing allows the same physical device to report to more than one location — without installing additional hardware.
2. Planning Your Multi-Homing Setup (Customer)
Before configuration, you should:
1️⃣ Provide a Floor Plan
Your floor plan should clearly show:
- All entrances and exits
- Shared passages
- Where cameras are installed
- How spaces connect
This ensures accurate configuration.
2️⃣ Confirm What You Want to Track
Clarify:
- Which areas require individual occupancy tracking
- Whether total building occupancy is required
- If reports are needed per store, per shared space, or both
3. Important Multi-Homing Rule
Each location calculates occupancy independently.
If a doorway connects two spaces, separate counting lines must be created for each location, even if they are drawn in the same physical position.
This ensures:
- Accurate IN/OUT logic
- No double-counting
- Independent occupancy calculations
- Clean reporting
4. Planning for Multi-homing
|
In this scenario:
Only external entrances affect Entire Premises occupancy. Internal movement between stores does not affect total building occupancy.

6. Validation Checklist
After setup:
✔ Enter building → Lobby and Entire Premises increase
✔ Enter Store 2 from outside → Store 2 and Entire Premises increase
✔ Move Lobby → Store → Lobby decreases, Store increases
✔ Move between stores → One increases, one decreases
✔ Exit building → Entire Premises decreases
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Does Multi-Homing duplicate traffic data?
No.
The device captures traffic once at the physical level. The platform distributes that data logically to assigned locations. Proper count line configuration prevents double counting.
2. Can one counting line be assigned to multiple locations?
No.
Each location must have its own dedicated counting line, even if the lines are drawn in the same physical doorway. Sharing lines between locations will cause occupancy calculation conflicts.
3. Why do I need separate counting lines for the same doorway?
Because each location calculates occupancy independently.
IN for one location is often OUT for another. Separate lines ensure independent direction logic and accurate reporting.
4. What entrances affect “Entire Premises” occupancy?
Only true external entrances should impact Entire Premises occupancy.
Internal movement (Lobby ↔ Store or Store ↔ Store) must NOT change total building occupancy.
5. How can I tell if my Multi-Homing setup is incorrect?
Common signs include:
- Entire Premises changes when moving between internal areas
- Lobby occupancy increases when someone enters a store
- Occupancy counts continuously drift upward or downward
- Stores do not balance when customers move between them
- If any of these occur, review counting line assignments and direction logic.
6. Can Multi-Homing be removed later?
Yes.
Multi-Homing assignments can be removed without deleting historical data. However, changes should always be validated after modification.
7. Does Multi-Homing require additional hardware?
No.
It uses existing 3D Scope II devices. The configuration is handled at the platform level.
8. What happens if direction logic is reversed?
If IN and OUT directions are incorrectly configured:
- Occupancy may decrease when it should increase
- Entire Premises may become inaccurate
- Stores may not balance properly
- Always validate using live walk testing after setup.
9. Is Multi-Homing suitable for all environments?
Multi-Homing is ideal for:
- Shared retail spaces
- Mall environments
- Multi-tenant buildings
- Stores with multiple entrances
- It may not be suitable if physical layout does not allow clear directional separation.
10. Who should perform Multi-Homing configuration?
DEV handles device duplication/mapping.
- Support/Operations handle count line creation and validation.
- All configurations must be validated before closing the request.
